Marriage is considerable news at the moment, whether it’s for its marginalisation in today’s modern world, or changes to the law that defines it. There’s also its place within the reproach system too granting you dig deeper! Throughout all this media coverage a ornery statement that continues to crop up is: ‘Well it’s just a piece of paper isn’t it?’ Well, is it?
To somebody who’s never heard of the concept of marriage, it could appear to be a sort of business deal. Contracts are signed and promises produced between two parties. Not exactly romantic a notion but there is a ring of truth to it!
To the majority though, marriage is about, amongst other things: love, commitment, friendship and vitally, trust.
Love is a difficult thing to describe, let alone prove! But you can say one thing: you know it when you feel it. The best explanation available to me is that when you are apart from someone you love you feel an emptiness that singly disappears when you see that person again. Moreover when you are with someone you love, the rest like the world is excluded as you individual have time for that significant other.
Commitment is central to marriage. A commitment to support each other through the good times and the bad. A commitment to each other over any outside influence. A commitment of time. A commitment to accept each other’s bad traits. A commitment to be happy together. In summary: a commitment to each other.
In marriage, whilst love is very important, friendship is equally as vital. Marriage means committing your life to someone and the best person to commit your life to is a friend. Sharing hobbies, laughing together, enjoying being in each other’s company; being best friends is key if you are to remain happy jointly for many years.
Finally on the detail is trust. Without trust, there is no marriage. You have to consign your partner with your health, finances, children and, concerning course, your heart. Commission is like the mortar where the marriage is a house. It holds everything together. It makes the good times distinctive and helps you endure through the bad times. If you syndicate each distinct you can take on all the world has to throw at you.
The perfect symbol of all those aspects of marriage is one thing: the wedding ring. A simple but effective reminder that you can have among you at all times.
